About the Georgia Teen Republicans

A Traditon of Service

Our organization traces its roots to the late 1970's when the first Teen Age Republican (TAR) clubs were organized in Georgia.  Congressman Newt Gingrich was an early sponsor of the movement, and the Teen Age Republicans thrived through the Reagan Revolution of the 1980's and the Congressman Gingrich's Contract With America in 1994.   Several of the State Chairmen of the Georgia Teen Age Republicans during the 1980s were Ed Henry, Johnny Martinez and Lane Watts, all from Gingrich's Sixth Congressional District south of Atlanta.  In 1991, John Bradberry of North Fulton was elected as State Chairman, and the organization came under the direct sponsorship of the Georgia Republican Party.  David Shafer, then Executive Director of the Georgia Republican Party, served as State Advisor.

After a period of inactivity that began in the late 1990s, the Teen Age Republicans were resurrected in the 2002 election cycle under the guidance of Linda Parker, then Chairman of the Cherokee County Republican Party and Advisor to the Cherokee County Teen Age Republicans.  Teen Age Republicans helped elect Governor Sonny Perdue, the first Republican to hold that office since Reconstruction.  The State Chairmen during this period were Dallas White of Cherokee County, Dania Galloway of Paulding County, Jade Morey of Cobb County and Johnny Blankenship of Douglas County.
.
Lee Tippett was elected State Chairman at the 2008 State Convention at the First Assemblies of God Church in Griffin, GA. Tippett resigned following the 2008 elections. Tyler Bishop of  Bartow County took over as State Chairman in late 2008, and in 2009, he recruited Lane Watts as the new State Advisor.  Lane was Chairman of the Third Congressional District Republican Party and a former State Chairman of the Georgia Teen Age Republicans.

The 2009 State Convention was held in Atlanta in the House Chamber of the State Capitol Building. Trey O'Callaghan of Fulton County was elected State Chairman. Under the tenure of Chairman Trey O'Callaghan the Georgia Teen Republicans built a strong grassroots network of teen volunteers in every corner of the state ready to take on the 2010 elections head on.

With over thirty chapters, the Georgia Teen Republicans held its 2010 State Convention in the Senate Chamber of the State Capitol.  Mark Pettitt of Gainesville was elected State Chairman.  Senator David Shafer and Representative Melvin Everson were the keynote speakers and inducted as Honorary Life Members of the Georgia Teen Republicans. Shafer was also recognized with the TR's first ever Conservative Leadership Award.

The 2011 State Convention was one of the largest attended in the organization's history, packing the Senate Chamber of the State Capitol. Kyle Constable of Leesburg was elected State Chairman. Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black and Georgia Republican Party Executive Director Kevin Harris were the keynote speakers. The convention passed a resolution recognizing past Chairmen Tyler Bishop, Trey O'Callaghan and Mark Pettitt for their dedication to the organization, ultimately resulting in the Georgia Teen Republicans playing a greater role than ever before during the 2010 mid-term elections.
